PTE Summarization Written Text Exercise 26
Language Evolution in the Digital Age
Language is constantly evolving, and the digital age has accelerated this process with the rise of texting, memes, emojis, and internet slang. Critics often argue that these changes are degrading grammar and formal communication, particularly among youth. However, linguists note that language adaptation is natural and that digital communication actually demonstrates creativity, code-switching, and rapid meaning-making. The ability to shift between formal and informal registers—such as using professional language in an email and casual abbreviations in a chat—reflects linguistic competence, not decline. Social media has also introduced new words and expressions into mainstream language, some of which are eventually added to dictionaries. Rather than harming language, digital communication is shaping it to meet the needs of fast-paced, interactive environments.
