PTE Summarization Written Text Exercise 22
The Challenge of Storing Renewable Energy
As the world shifts toward renewable energy sources like solar and wind, the challenge of storing energy becomes increasingly important due to the intermittent nature of these power supplies. Batteries, such as lithium-ion systems, are widely used for short-term storage, but they are costly, have limited capacity, and rely on scarce materials. Other emerging technologies, like flow batteries, compressed air storage, and hydrogen energy, offer longer-duration solutions but are not yet scalable or affordable for widespread use. Pumped hydro storage is currently the most common large-scale solution, but it is geographically limited. Scientists and engineers are racing to find storage systems that are efficient, durable, and environmentally friendly. The future of energy independence and grid stability hinges on solving this storage dilemma. Without significant advancements, the full potential of renewable energy cannot be realized, and reliance on fossil fuels may continue.
